The Chattogram University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) election is witnessing increased interest, with 528 candidates now vying for central positions.
This follows an extension of the nomination period on Wednesday, which saw an additional 39 students collect forms for the central election.
The hall council election also saw a rise in contenders, with 34 more students picking up nomination forms on the final day. The number of hopefuls for hall council positions now totals 1,162.
The Election Commission Secretary Prof AKM Ariful Haque Siddique confirmed the updated figures.
He explained that the original nomination deadline had been Tuesday, while submissions were due Wednesday. However, on Wednesday morning, Abdullah Al Noman, the general secretary of the university’s student wing, requested an extension.
The Election Commission responded by calling an emergency meeting, deciding to extend both the collection and submission deadlines by a day, meaning forms have to be submitted by Thursday afternoon.
By evening, the Election Commission reported significant participation across the halls. For instance, 42 candidates from AF Rahman Hall, 41 from Alaol Hall, and 53 from Atish Dipangkar Srigyan Hall picked up nomination forms. Other halls such as Shah Amanat and Shaheed Abdur Rab had 50 and 38 candidates respectively.
In terms of form submission, 125 central candidates and 246 hall council hopefuls have already turned in their papers. The submission numbers reflect a similar distribution across the halls, with notable participation from halls such as Bijoy-24 (17 submissions) and Masterda Suriya Sen (15 submissions).
