The historic Baishakhi procession ushering in the Bangla New Year was brought out from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka at 9:00 am on Tuesday, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere across the campus.
The procession started from the third gate of the Faculty of Fine Arts and moved towards Doyel Chattar, passing the Raju Memorial Sculpture and Bangla Academy, before returning to the faculty along the same route.
A police contingent led the procession, followed by a group of Dhaka University students carrying the national flag.
They were followed by distinguished guests, including Cultural Affairs Adviser Nitai Roy Choudhury, DU Vice-Chancellor ABM Obaidul Islam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof Abdus Salam, teachers of Sada Dal, and members of the organising committee, all carrying the main banner.
The procession also featured prominent motifs such as a rooster, violin, pigeon, horse and elephant, displayed one after another to reflect the richness of folk traditions and the country’s cultural uniqueness.
The large artistic structures, made of bamboo, wood and colourful paper, added a striking visual dimension to the celebration.

People from all walks of life joined the event in large numbers. The programme began with the rendition of the national anthem, while students, teachers and people from different professions added to the festive spirit that swept across the campus.
Members of several ethnic and minority communities also took part, showcasing elements of their cultural heritage and everyday life.
Festival-goers started gathering at the Faculty of Fine Arts from as early as 8:00 am. Dressed in colourful attire and accompanied by traditional musical instruments, they created a joyous atmosphere, celebrating the Bengali New Year with enthusiasm and unity.
