Dhaka University has declared a three-day period of mourning in honour of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia who passed away at 6am on Tuesday.
The mourning will be observed from Tuesday (30 December) to Thursday (1 January).
During this period, all classes and examinations at the university will remain suspended.
The information was disclosed in a statement issued by the university's Public Relations Office on Tuesday morning. As part of the mourning observance, the national flag has been kept at half-mast at all academic and administrative buildings of the university from Tuesday.
The janaza (funeral prayer) of Begum Khaleda Zia will be held today (Wednesday) after Zuhr prayers at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
To facilitate participation in the janaza, the university administration has arranged adequate special buses and transport facilities for teachers, students, officers, and staff.
The statement also noted that special academic seminars and discussion meetings will be organised at Dhaka University to highlight Begum Khaleda Zia's eventful life and political contributions.
In addition, from Tuesday, Qur'an recitations, doa, and special prayers have been arranged at the university's central mosque, as well as at mosques in all halls and residential areas, seeking eternal peace for the departed soul. Special prayer services are also being held at other religious places of worship.
The university authorities further stated that future mourning programmes will be finalised in line with subsequent state programmes announced by the government.
