Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman has said the university is taking preparation to hold the election of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) in March 2019.

“The DU administration is holding this primary programme before the polls. We need to hold more meetings to arrange it properly. As part of the election, the process of updating the voters list is going on in full swing,” he said.

His remarks came up after a meeting with the leaders of all active students organisations at the campus on Sunday.

President and general secretary of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), president and secretary of BCL’s DU unit, president and general secretary of the central committee and DU unit of Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal (JCD), president and secretary of the central committee and DU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU), Bangladesh Chhatra Federation and different-left-leaning organisations, among others, were present in the meeting.

The last DUCSU election was held in 1990.

The election slated for 1992 did not take place, although a democratic government assumed office in 1991, more than 16 years after the end of military dictatorship.

Currently, Dhaka University has around 33,000 students and about 1,800 teachers. The Teachers’ Association holds elections regularly.
