Dhaka University’s top policy-making body, the syndicate, has recommended the senate to rename five campus facilities named after Sheikh Hasina’s family, including two residential halls.
The proposed changes include renaming Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall to Shahid Osman Hadi Hall and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall to Bir Protik Captain Setara Begum Hall, bdnews24.com reports.
The syndicate also suggested renaming two staff quarters, Russell Tower and Bangabandhu Tower, as well as Sultana Kamal Hostel.
According to a syndicate member, these recommendations were made during a meeting at the Dhaka University Senate on Thursday.
He told bdnews24.com on condition of anonymity, “In view of the students’ demands, the syndicate discussed changing the name of five establishments in the name of the Sheikh family.
“Since the syndicate cannot change the name, the highest policy-making forum has recommended it to the Senate.
“Now the Senate will finalise whether the change will be made.”
The syndicate has also filed a charge sheet against four “Awami League-leaning” teachers of Dhaka University, confirmed Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmed.
The four teachers named in the chargesheet are former Jagannath University vice-chancellor Prof Sadeka Halim, Prof AKM Jamal, Teachers’ Association General Secretary Prof Zeenat Huda, and Prof Mashiur Rahman – all from the university’s Department of Sociology.
The proctor said, “Notices will be sent to them to show cause why local expulsion should not be imposed. Further action will follow after that.”
