The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti have condemned widespread post-election violence across the country following the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
At a press conference held in front of the DUCSU building at 5:30 pm on Saturday, DUCSU leaders alleged that activists of the BNP carried out attacks on leaders and supporters of the 11-party alliance in different parts of the country.
They claimed that more than 40 incidents of clashes and assaults have taken place since the election.
DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad said two types of incidents are currently being reported. “In some cases, when a BNP candidate loses, the blame is being shifted to other candidates and rebel contenders, and BNP activists are attacking their own party members. In other cases, where BNP candidates have won, there are open attacks on Jamaat and NCP candidates and their supporters. Even students of Dhaka University are not being spared,” he said.
Farhad described the situation as alarming, adding that no clear message has come from the highest leadership and there has been no visible, effective action from law enforcement agencies. “If any of our students or their family members are harmed, or if ordinary citizens continue to be attacked, we will be forced to return to the streets,” he warned.
He further cautioned that if the violence continues, DUCSU will launch a fresh movement with students across the country.
DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem said students had previously taken to the streets to dismantle what he termed a fascist structure and to build a new political culture. “But the picture we are seeing after the election- violence, threats and clashes is deeply concerning. Those who are now in charge of running the state must ensure the safety of every citizen. Even a single death must be investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice. If you fail, we will be compelled to return to the streets,” he said.
Shadik Kayem said responsible leadership must make it clear that violent politics will not be tolerated in Bangladesh. He also expressed hope that Tarique Rahman would restrain his party activists and play an effective role in ensuring a democratic environment.
Earlier in the afternoon, at around 3:00 pm, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti held a separate press conference at Madur Canteen. Leaders and activists from its central committee, Dhaka metropolitan unit and DU unit were present.
Jatiya Chhatra Shakti President Zahid Ahsan alleged that the BNP had failed to respect the people’s verdict.
“We hoped the BNP would honor the public mandate, but even before 24 hours had passed since the election, they showed complete disregard for that verdict,” he said.
He claimed that the organization is documenting incidents of violence allegedly carried out by BNP activists against members of the 11-party alliance.
“We will document every incident across the country and present evidence of these violent activities through public projections,” he added.
