The Islami Chhatra Shibir has removed Joyen Uddin Sarker Tonmoy from their panel for the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, allegedly over a controversial post on social media.
It was previously alleged that Joyen had posted on social media calling Birshreshtha Matiur Rahman a “flight hijacker”. He later withdrew from the post after facing severe backlash from students, bdnews24.com reports.
The issue, however, resurfaced when Tonmoy bought a nomination form for the Shibir panel on Aug 18, triggering renewed criticism and discussion.
According to Miftahul Hossain Al Maruf, another executive member candidate from the panel, Tonmoy was removed from the “Oikyo Boddho Shikkarthi Jote”, or United Students' Council, panel because of this controversy.
Maruf said, "We are uncompromising on the issue of 1971. We removed him as soon as the discussion about his post began."
When asked who would replace him, he said that they would announce the candidate by Aug 25.
