The students of engineering universities continued their demonstration in the capital on Thursday, protesting police attacks and pressing for their three-point demand.

Alongside BUET students, many students from other universities in Dhaka also joined the protest, and the students announced that their previously declared shutdown programme would continue.

The students brought out a rally from the BUET Shaheed Minar at 4:30 pm. The march moved through TSC, Doel Chattar, Shiksha Bhaban intersection, High Court, Kakrail, Bailey Road, and finally reached the DMP office. Later, the students held a press conference at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

They declared that the shutdown in engineering universities across the country would continue until their demands are met. They also outlined their next steps - peaceful divisional gatherings of engineers, followed by a national convention after a week of programmes. They warned that tougher movements would follow, if their demands remained unfulfilled.

The students reiterated their three major demands: cancellation of the 33 per cent quota in promotions, opening technical grades to more qualified candidates, and ensuring that only graduates with a BSc degree can use the title 'engineer'.

On Wednesday night, the Engineers' Rights Movement had declared a "complete shutdown" in all engineering universities, including BUET. As Thursday was a regular weekly holiday at BUET, the campus remained closed anyway.

Meanwhile, BUET authorities suspended all undergraduate exams, scheduled between August 30 and September 18. The university registrar issued an urgent notice on Wednesday, stating that the decision was taken in view of the current situation.
