Jahangirnagar University has renamed four of its residential halls previously bearing the Sheikh family’s names.
One of the halls has been named after Felani Khatun, a 15-year-old Bangladeshi girl killed by India’s border guards in 2011 at Kurigram, causing national outrage.
The decision was taken at the university syndicate meeting on Thursday, according to Acting Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman, who confirmed the development on Friday.
Among the changes, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall is now Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq Hall.
The new ten-storey Sheikh Russel Hall has been redesignated as Nawab Salimullah Hall.
The former Sheikh Hasina Hall takes the title July 24 Jagoroni Hall, while Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall has been rechristened Shaheed Felani Khatun Hall.
