Jahangirnagar University marked 53 years with vibrant 'University Day' celebration

On its 53rd anniversary, Jahangirnagar University (JU) celebrated 'University Day' with various colourful events. The festivities commenced on Friday morning, January 12, with a jubilant procession, starting from the Business Studies faculty and concluding at Selim Al Deen Muktamancha.
During the opening ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Md. Nurul Alam remembered the university's 53-year journey, noting the remarkable achievements of its teachers and students in education, research, arts, literature, politics, and sports, both domestically and internationally.
"A significant number of faculty and students from JU have earned the distinction by securing a place among the top two per cent of the world's best scientists. Furthermore, the university has been ranked in the 'World University Ranking 2024' for education and research, as recognised by the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, bringing honour and glory to the institution", he stated.
Additional day-long activities during University Day included Blood Group determining, a Commemoration at Selim Al Deen Muktmancha, Football and Handball matches between former and current students, as well as cultural events organised by the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) and Students Counselling and Guidance Centre. Furthermore, a painting exhibition was hosted by the Fine Arts Department in the Zaheir Raihan Auditorium, and a Pitha Mela (Native Pancake Fare) took place in the central cafeteria area.
Jahangirnagar University Day has been observed annually on January 12 since 2001. In his address, the Vice-Chancellor thanked former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdul Bayes for introducing University Day in 2001.
Notably, in the academic year 1970-1971, the university's journey began with the admission of 150 students (in the first batch) on January 4 in the four departments of economics, geography, mathematics, and statistics. On January 12, 1971, Rear Admiral SM Ahsan, then governor of East Pakistan and the university's chancellor, inaugurated the university. Dr. Surat Ali was the project director, and Professor Dr. Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, a distinguished chemist, was the first Vice-Chancellor.
