The Department of Psychology at Jagannath University marked a historic milestone this week, hosting a grand farewell ceremony for the very first batch of the Master's in Counselling and Clinical Psychology (MCCP) program.
The event, held at the department’s Laboratory-1, was an emotional yet celebratory occasion, symbolizing the transition of these students from academic trainees to professional mental health practitioners.
The ceremony was a significant moment for the department, highlighting the success of its specialized professional program. The event was graced by the presence of the department’s most senior and esteemed faculty members, creating an atmosphere of reverence and academic camaraderie.
Presiding over the significance of the day was Professor Dr. Kazi Saifuddin, the Director of the Professional Program. In his address, Dr. Saifuddin emphasized the unique responsibility that rests on the shoulders of this first batch. He noted that as the "pioneers" of the MCCP degree at Jagannath University, these graduates will set the standard for future cohorts. He urged the outgoing students to adhere strictly to ethical guidelines in their clinical practice and to serve the community with empathy and scientific rigor.
Professor Dr. Asoke Kumar Saha, the Member Secretary of the program, played a pivotal role in the ceremony. Dr. Saha, who has been instrumental in the curriculum and structural development of the MCCP, delivered a moving speech. He reflected on the journey of the students, acknowledging the rigorous training they underwent in the laboratory where they now stood for the last time as students. He expressed his confidence in their ability to tackle complex mental health issues using modern therapeutic techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and wished them success in their future endeavors.
The session was further illuminated by the presence of Professor Dr. Noor Mohammad, who offered his blessings to the students. He spoke about the growing need for psychological intervention in modern society and how these graduates are now equipped to fill that gap. Professor Dr. Akram Uzzaman also addressed the gathering, sharing anecdotes from the classroom and encouraging the students to remain lifelong learners, noting that the field of psychology is ever-evolving.
Other distinguished faculty members present at the event joined the senior professors in bidding farewell. The atmosphere in Laboratory-1 was charged with a mix of nostalgia and optimism. For the students, this laboratory was not just a room, but the place where they honed their practical skills, conducted assessments, and learned the nuances of the human mind.
As the ceremony concluded, the faculty and students exchanged pleasantries and captured memories in photographs. The event signaled not just a goodbye, but the launch of a new generation of psychologists ready to contribute to the mental health landscape of Bangladesh, carrying the prestige and teachings of Jagannath University with them.
