Jahangirnagar University (JU) commenced its admission test for the 2024-2025 academic year on Sunday with the 'D' unit exam under the Faculty of Biological Sciences.
On the first day, only the female candidates of the unit took the exam, with an attendance rate of approximately 85 per cent, according to exam officials.
The exam began at 9 am, was conducted in five shifts, and concluded at 4:15 pm.
During the morning session, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan visited the Faculty of Biological Sciences building to inspect the ongoing admission test.
Speaking on the spot, he remarked, “The exam is being held in a very conducive environment. I am noticing considerable interest among the students. I hope the exams for other faculties will be conducted smoothly.”
He added, “However, there has been a noticeable increase in traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. I hope the traffic police will take prompt action to manage the situation.”
The exams for male candidates of the same unit, along with the IBA exam, will be held on Monday in five shifts.
In the 'D' unit, there are 155 seats each for boys and girls, totalling 310 available spots. However, with 86,788 applications received, around 280 candidates are competing for every seat.
In a broader context, admission tests will be conducted across seven units, where 262,490 candidates are vying for 1,816 seats.
The proctorial team has been active in managing incidents during the admission test. Three local eateries were fined for overcharging; Mama-Bhagina Hotel was fined 10,000 taka, while 'Banglar Swad' and 'Nurjahan' restaurants received 5,000 taka fines each.
Students also arrested two individuals for mobile phone theft at the main gate and then handed them over to the police.
Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam stated, "We are conducting raids to prevent unpleasant incidents during this admission period."
