Classes for the first-year Bachelor (Honours) students at Jahangirnagar University (JU), admitted in the academic year 2022-23, are scheduled to commence on November 30.
Despite a five-month gap since the admission test, the physical education program for freshers will not take place. Although the classes of all departments and institutes will run online, reportedly, no exam will be held during this period.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Central Admission Management Committee chaired by Dr. Md. Nurul Alam, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, on Tuesday, November 21, at 9:30 am.
Syed Mohammad Ali Reza, Deputy Registrar (Academic) of the University and Secretary of the Central Admission Management Committee, stated, "The university administration is working towards achieving the goal of ensuring full accommodation to the students out of 'Gonoroom culture'. However, the delay in the outsourcing manpower recruitment process has hindered the opening of the newly constructed hall. Online classes have been initiated temporarily to prevent students from facing inconvenience in Gonorooms."
However, varying reactions from university stakeholders have been noticed. Some expressed the sentiment that if classes were to be started virtually, then there was no need for this prolonged delay.
KanojKanti Roy, the former general secretary of the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front-JU branch, conveyed to the university administration during a human chain event today, "You are felling trees and constructing buildings and halls without proper planning due to a shortage of classrooms. Yet, you cannot initiate them. This failure is on your part. Our demand is that the freshmen of the 52 batch should commence their classes in university classrooms."
The admission test for the academic year 2022-23 took place between June 18 and June 22 this year. Despite the five-month period, the commencement of physical classes for the new batch has been delayed, citing reasons such as an accommodation crisis.
