JU professor appointed visiting scholar of Harvard University

Associate Professor of the Department of Government and Politics of Jahangirnagar University and political scientist Dr Mohammad Tarikul Islam has been appointed as a visiting scholar (post-doctoral fellow) at Harvard University, USA, for six months. He will join the Center for International Development, a Harvard Kennedy School of Government subsidiary, early next year.

In an immediate response to the prestigious fellowship at Harvard, Dr Islam said, "Thank you very much to Almighty Allah. My dream was to be involved in research and teaching at Harvard University. Please pray that I can utilise this prestigious fellowship to enhance excellence in education and research and make our dear Jahangirnagar University well known in the world."

Previously, Dr Islam completed prestigious visiting research and post-doctoral fellowships at Oxford University, the University of Cambridge and the School of Oriental and African Studies, (SOAS) University of London. 

Before joining Jahangirnagar University as a lecturer in 2014, he worked in various managerial capacities at the United Nations Development Programme Bangladesh for 7 years. During brief missions at UNDP country offices in Indonesia, Nepal and China, Professor Islam gained hands-on experiences that continue to inform his research and teaching.

Dr Islam is interested in Local Government, Human Security, Foreign Relations of Bangladesh towards South Asia and the UK, Politics of Migration, Environmental Governance and Disaster Management research. 

Two books by this internationally acclaimed researcher have recently been published by renowned British multinational publisher Routledge and German-British academic publishing company Springer Nature. Besides, his research papers have been published in Elsevier, Oxford, Sage and Cambridge. 

He is a regular contributor to the South Asia Blog of the London School of Economics and Political Science, Oxford Political Review, SOAS Blog and the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. 

Dr Tarikul Islam is a noted columnist also. He writes opinions, columns and editorials for various national and international newspapers, including The Financial Express, The Daily Star, The Business Standard, The Daily Independent, Dainik Jugantar and Nepali Daily Khabarhub.
