Arafat Siam (25), a student of Physics at Jahangirnagar University, committed suicide in room 115/B of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall.
A student of Jahangirnagar University committed suicide in his room yesterday. His hanging body was recovered from the dormitory on April 4 at around 7 pm.
Deceased Arafat Siam (25) was a student of the 45th batch of the Physics Department and a resident of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall. He is from Chilahati of Nilphamari district and is allegedly involved in spiritual practices.
Eyewitnesses said Siam lived in room number 115 of block B of the hall alone. After Maghrib prayer, some fellow students went to meet him, but he didn't open his door. When they peeked through the window, they saw him hanging from the ceiling fan.
Tagor Devnath Shuvo, a friend of the deceased from the same department and hall, said, "I went to Siam's room before noon on Tuesday and called him several times. Later in the afternoon I called again but got no response. In the evening, I removed the paper on the window glass and found Arafat hanging inside. Then we broke the door and rescued his body."
After breaking the door, he was immediately taken to University's Medical Centre, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Birendra Kumar Biswas, the medical centre's doctor, said, "Siam was brought to the medical center at around 7 in the evening. Then we checked, he was already dead. When his body was found, there was a rope strung (deeply) around his neck. He died due to hanging."
Provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, Obaidur Rahman, said, "Students found him hanging in his room and brought him to the medical centre. The doctor on duty there declared him dead."
After the relatives came, his body was handed over to them. The first Janazah prayer was held in front of the hall at 12:30 am. Then they took him to Nilphamari in a freezing ambulance.
Before the incident, the deceased posted a long status on his Facebook wall titled 'On the way to eternity'. There he discussed various spiritual practices such as life, death, soul, body, the purpose of life, meditation etc.
The status of around 1500 words includes, "All my searches find a way, tonight. I have got all my answers. It's a devine moment....The sensation, the feeling to come out of body, is just insane. Astral travel, being out of body is not just a concept for me now....."
On the study table in his room, a book titled 'Death: An Inside Story: A Book for All Those Who Shall Die' written by an Indian spiritual leader 'Sadhguru' was found.
