The Department of English at Jahangirnagar University is organising a weekly seminar on 'Variationist Sociolinguistics' tomorrow, May 28th. Karola Schmidt, a PhD candidate at the Chair of English Linguistics at Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany, will deliver the seminar.

The talk will commence at 2 pm and focus on the study of variation in language as investigated in the field of variationist linguistics. It will give an overview of what variation means and the key aspects, requirements and methods of variationist linguistics. Further, choosing a variationist approach will highlight what kind of results one can collect. Anyone interested is welcome to join the sessions.

Associate Professor of the Department, Md Afaz Uddin, said, "The seminar will cover a topic relevant to our Linguistics course. With the English language being widely used worldwide, the discussant aims to illuminate the diverse nature of English." During the speech, the speaker will emphasise the various studies conducted on language diversity across regions such as Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Ms Schmidt joined the Department of English on May 25th for a 10-day Research Stay related to her research project titled 'Epicentres in World Englishes: Empirical Diachronic Studies of Present-Day South Asian Englishes.'

In Karola Schmidt's words, this research stay is "part of a larger project looking to appreciate the English spoken in Bangladesh. A research stay at Jahangirnagar University would give me valuable insight into the local research and allow me to further the study of Bangladeshi English based on data gathered on-site."

The seminar is included in her stay, and a workshop on 'Corpus Linguistics' will be held on Wednesday at the same time and place.

Additionally, surveys and classroom observations will be conducted, and she will have conversations with teachers and students from both the department and the Language Centre at JU. Her departure is scheduled for June 3rd.
