For nearly three decades, students of Jahangirnagar University have been contributing fees to the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) fund, but the university treasury holds no comprehensive financial records of the fund, states JUCSU General Secretary Mazharul Islam.
He made the statement during a press conference on Sunday, following a meeting with the university administration.
During the conference, JUCSU leaders presented six key demands to the administration, including: the full disclosure of 33 years' fund accounts; investigation into controversial and irregular appointments; swift settlement of the complaints against faculty within two weeks; implementation of teacher evaluation and re-marking procedures; clear enforcement of the "Efficiency and Discipline Ordinance" for academic misconduct; and publication of a white paper on alleged corruption in new hall construction within seven days.
Mazharul Islam said, "Two months have passed since the newly-elected JUCSU representatives assumed office, yet we have not received the complete financial statement of the fund. Despite repeated communications with the administration, they have failed to provide a satisfactory response. The administration has also stated that previous years' funds were spent from the university's 'central fund', even though these funds originated from student contributions."
"JUCSU currently holds only Tk 1.0 million, which is insufficient to run student welfare, cultural, sports, and academic programmes. The administration claims that previous years' funds were spent from the university's central fund, but these monies originally came from student contributions," he added.
Responding to this, university's treasurer Professor Abdur Rob said, "The JUCSU fund from the past 30 years has already been spent. However, the funds were used for various student-related activities. We will soon publish a detailed statement."
