Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced the inauguration of six newly built residential halls with an expenditure of 450 crores at Jahangirnagar University (JU) under 'The Further Development Project' and the previously constructed Wazed Mia Science Research Center. The ten-story dormitories will accommodate 1000 students each, with three for boys and three for girls.
She announced the grand opening of this infrastructure through video conferencing from Ganabhaban today at 10 am.
At the time, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nurul Alam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sheikh Md. Monzurul Huq, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mostafa Feeroz, Treasurer Professor Dr Rasheda Akhtar, and deans of various faculties, teachers, students, and officials were present.
After the opening ceremony, a joyous procession took place from Zahir Raihan Auditorium at the University, concluding in front of the new administrative building.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nurul Alam stated, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina allocated approximately Tk 1450 crore for further development. In the first phase of that project, we built six residential halls, addressing the housing crisis of students. This has added a new dimension to the residential identity of the University."
"Second phase of the project is underway. Particularly, the Honorable Prime Minister approved the naming of 'Sheikh Russell Hall' and 'Sheikh Kamal Sports Complex."
Earlier, on August 11, the six newly constructed halls were named. Among the three halls for female students, Hall No. 17 has been named Begum Rokeya Hall, Hall No. 18 as Fazilatunnesa Hall, and Hall No. 19 as Birpratik Taraman Bibi Hall.
Among the three halls for male students, Hall No. 20 is named Shahid Tazuddin Ahmed Hall, Hall No. 21 is named Sheikh Russell Hall, and Hall No. 22 is named Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
It is noteworthy that intending to transform Jahangirnagar University into a model university, on October 23, 2018, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved a project worth Tk 1,445 crore 36 lakh. Under this further development project, 23 infrastructures will be constructed at Jahangirnagar University.
