The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has declared all primary level schools in eight divisional cities closed amid protests over quota reform in government jobs.

The ministry gave the information in a press statement on Wednesday.

In consideration of the safety of children, all government primary schools in the city corporation areas of all eight divisional cities under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, primary schools run under the Children Welfare Trust, and learning centres run by the Bureau of Non-Formal Education will remain closed until further notice, the ministry said.

The government had previously closed secondary schools, colleges and universities.

At least six people were reported dead amid day-long clashes surrounding the quota reform protest on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Education had closed schools and colleges indefinitely over the violence. The HSC exams scheduled for Thursday were also postponed.

The University Grants Commission also announced the closure of public and private universities, as well as medical and textile engineering colleges.
