Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has been appointed as the 30th vice-chancellor of Dhaka University.
The education ministry issued a gazette notification on Tuesday, confirming the appointment with the approval of the President and Chancellor of the university.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointment as per the Dhaka University Order, 1973, read the notification.
This appointment will be effective from the date of his joining and Prof Niaz will be entitled to the salary along with allowances equivalent to his present post, it said.
The president can cancel the appointment at any time, the notification added.
However, teachers, students, and officers congratulated DU VC.
Before taking charge as DU VC, there was criticism about the political affiliation of the new vice-chancellor.
The new vice-chancellor of the university clarified the issue while talking to journalists after taking charge on Tuesday.
He said, "I had not participated in political activities in the past and still have not. If someone wants to talk about my politics, that is his freedom.
“Now I don't feel the time and need to answer each and every topic. We are going through difficult times; our main task is to advance the university. All my actions will be based on fairness and impartiality."
