

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, or DSHE, has directed schools to take measures to reintroduce academic pathways in secondary schools in Bangladesh starting in 2025.
As a part of this decision, the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, or NCTB, wrote to the Directorate of Technical Education, Directorate of Madrasha Education, or DME, and the DSHE to put students of Grades 9 and 10 into groupings following the 2012 National Curriculum on October 2.
The directive on groupings allowing for a more tailored educational experience, focusing on specific subjects or skill sets is part of the government’s decision to restore the previous education system.
On Wednesday, the DSHE wrote to the heads of all educational institutions to include science, arts, and business pathways for the ninth and tenth graders following the 2012 National Curriculum for the new academic year, according to a bdnews24.com report.
After coming into power, the interim government decided to do away with the current curriculum.
The former government removed departmental streams [science, arts, and business studies] to reform the education system for ninth graders from the academic year 2024. As such, there are currently no science, arts, or business studies streams in Grade 9.
However, according to the new decision of the interim government, students advancing to Grade 10 will have to follow the 2012 curriculum for SSC and equivalent exams.
They can take their pick from science, arts, and business studies streams based on factors such as their interests, abilities, or future career aspirations.
For this, a short syllabus will be developed for Grade 10 students so that they can complete their learning activities for one academic year, said the NCTB in its newly issued guideline.
According to the NCTB, students advancing to Grade 9 under the general, madrasa and technical education boards will follow the 2023 national curriculum from 2025.
Secondary and equivalent exams will include the complete syllabus from 2027.
