Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Chhatra Shibir-backed candidates have secured key leadership positions in the long-awaited Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election, winning the posts of Vice President (VP) and Assistant General Secretary (AGS).

Shibir-supported candidates Mostakur Rahman Jahid and SM Salman Sabbir have been elected VP and AGS respectively.

Meanwhile, former student movement leader Salahuddin Ammar clinched victory in the General Secretary (GS) race, UNB reports.

BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal failed to secure any major post in the election.

According to unofficial results announced by Chief Returning Officer Prof Setaur Rahman on Friday morning, Mostakur, representing the Combined Students’ Alliance, secured 12,687 votes, defeating his closest rival Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir of the Chhatra Dal-backed United New Generation panel, who received 3,397 votes.

Independent candidate Salahuddin Ammar, from the Anti-Dominance Unity panel, bagged 11,497 votes while his nearest rival Fazle Rabbi Md Fahim Reza, backed by the Shibir panel, obtained 5,727 votes.

Both Ammar and Fahim Reza previously served as coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement.

In the AGS race, Shibir-backed Sabbir won with 6,975 votes, defeating Chhatra Dal-supported Jahin Biswas Esha, who received 5,951 votes.

The RUCSU, hall union, and student senate elections saw 247 candidates vying for 23 central posts, while 597 contestants ran for 15 hall union positions across 17 residential halls and 58 candidates competed for five student senate seats.

Out of 28,901 registered voters, 69.83 percent cast their ballots.

The turnout among female students from six women’s halls stood at 63.24 percent, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Shibir-backed panel swept landslide victories in the DUCSU, JUCSU and CUCSU elections.
