Students call Sunday sit-in at Shikkha Bhaban over Dhaka Central University demands

Students from the seven colleges have announced a continuous sit-in outside Shikkha Bhaban on Abdul Gani Road this Sunday, demanding the issuance of the Dhaka Central University Ordinance.

The declaration came around 4:15pm on Wednesday during a briefing outside Dhaka College, delivered by Abdur Rahman, a representative of the student movement demanding university status for the colleges.

Rahman said they no longer wished to inconvenience the public by repeatedly returning to the streets.

“If the ordinance process is not completed [ on Wednesday or Thursday], and the ordinance is not declared, from Sunday morning to evening, and for as long as necessary, every student will remain stationed there until the ordinance is issued,” he said.

BCS General Education Cadre officers fear that the proposed structure -- covering the seven colleges and other government colleges nationwide -- may undermine their promotional rights.

The students, however, insist the university’s legal framework must be confirmed swiftly and demand immediate issuance of the ordinance.
