The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday approved three new public universities to start regular classes and other activities from the next academic calendar, 2023-24.
The universities are - Kurigram Agricultural University, Sunamganj University of Science and Technology, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Pirojpur.
The universities will be able to admit students from next year. A maximum of 40 students are allowed to be admitted in any subject to achieve the objective of quality education and to ensure participatory teaching.
The decision was made in a meeting of the UGC, chaired by its member Prof Muhammed Alamgir, according to a statement.
The meeting also approved proposed faculties, departments and manpower appointments of these three universities on conditions.
In the meeting, Prof Alamgir expressed optimism that these universities would play an important role in the country's socio-economic development through research and creation of skilled manpower for a 'Smart Bangladesh'.
Regarding student admission, he said the number of students admitted to higher education institutions would be determined based on their infrastructure, quality education, and research management facilities.
There are 56 public universities in the country. Of these, 51 universities are conducting educational programmes.
Besides, the UGC has prepared and sent a policy to the Ministry of Education on how to conduct education programmes in the new public universities.
