Training on cognitive behaviour therapy held at Jagannath University

The Department of Psychology of Jagannath University (JnU), under the University Grants Commission’s Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Sub-Project, held a two-day training program and certificate giving ceremony titled “Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)” from January 25 to 26, 2026.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Professor Dr. Sabina Sharmin, Treasurer of Jagannath University, as the chief guest. In her address, she highlighted that modern society is experiencing increasing uncertainty, technological challenges, and generational gaps, all of which significantly affect mental well-being, according to a press release.

She emphasized the crucial role of evidence-based psychological interventions like CBT in maintaining mental stability and resilience. She also noted that such training programs enable psychology students to enhance both academic knowledge and practical skills.

The certificate giving ceremony was graced by Professor Dr. Mallik Akram Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences, Jagannath University, as the Chief Guest. The program was chaired by Professor Dr. Asoke Kumar Saha, Sub-Project Manager (SPM) of the HEAT Sub-Project and Professor of the Department of Psychology. Professor Dr. Kazi Saifuddin, Associate Sub-Project Manager (ASPM), attended the event as a Special Guest. Distinguished members present at the ceremony included Professor Dr. Noor Muhammad and Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram Uzzaman. Professor Dr. Fatema-Tu-Zohra Binte Zaman, Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, was also present.

In his speech, the Chief Guest emphasized that mental health has become a critical global concern and highlighted the importance of evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. He noted that this training would enhance the professional competencies of psychology students and contribute to the development of skilled mental health professionals in Bangladesh.

The training sessions were conducted by Professor Dr. Farjana Ahmed and Assistant Professor Bijon Barai as resource persons. The program included theoretical discussions, case analyses, and practical demonstrations of CBT techniques. The event was moderated by Professor Dr. Farjana Ahmed, Training Coordinator of the Department of Psychology.
