The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a cautionary notice on Tuesday against an unauthorised private university operating under the name East Asian University. The UGC has forwarded the matter for legal action.
According to a UGC statement, evidence was found of illegal activities by East Asian University, which has been presenting false information on its website (https://eaub.info/). The UGC has urged students, guardians, and employers not to be misled by the false claims published on the website.
The name of the university does not appear on the list of government-approved private universities. Consequently, the UGC collected information from the website, which lists the university's location as East Merul Badda in the capital. To verify its activities, the commission formed a two-member inspection team to conduct an on-site investigation.
Following the site inspection on January 20, 2025, the team reported that there is no campus of East Asian University in East Merul Badda. The website falsely claims that the university is approved by the Bangladesh government, UGC, Pharmacy Council, and Bangladesh Bar Council. However, the UGC's report confirmed that the institution is operating illegally without approval from these authorities.
The inspection team’s report concluded that the unauthorised institution is engaging in illegal activities, including certificate trading, through its website. It also recommended that a letter be sent to BTCL to immediately shut down the university’s website domain (https://eaub.info/) to prevent further fraud.
Additionally, the team advised requesting the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Ministry of Home Affairs to take necessary legal action against those managing the university. The UGC also recommended publishing a warning in national newspapers to alert the public and prevent further exploitation.
