Chill continues under fog as midweek cold snap looms over Bangladesh

A cold wave is intensifying across Bangladesh as the month of Poush reaches its midpoint.

The sun hides behind a fog-laden sky, and despite a slight temperature rise, the chill remains unrelenting.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted that this weather pattern will continue for the next two days.

The office also warned that a cold wave is likely to hit in the middle of the week.

On Sunday, Assistant Meteorologist Afruza Sultana told bdnews24.com: “According to the weather records in the past 24 hours, the temperature has slightly increased in different parts of the country.

“However, despite the increased temperature, the cold remains due to the foggy sky. This situation is expected to continue on Sunday and Monday.

“Temperatures could dip slightly Tuesday night, and a cold wave may strike.”

The Met Office said the lowest temperature in the country in the past 24 hours until 6am was recorded in Kishoreganj’s Nikli at 9.8 degrees Celsius.

The highest temperature was recorded in Teknaf at 28.6 degrees Celsius.

In its five-day forecast on Sunday, the department said moderate to dense fog may persist in some areas across the country from midnight to morning on Sunday and Monday, and in some places until noon.

The dense fog could temporarily disrupt air traffic, inland waterways, and road transport, it added.

Night and day temperatures may remain largely unchanged across the country over the next two days, with the chill persisting in many areas due to foggy weather.

The Met Office also forecasts moderate to dense fog in some river basin areas from midnight to morning on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, while light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere.

Night temperatures may dip slightly on Tuesday, with day temperatures remaining mostly steady.

On Wednesday night, temperatures are expected to stay nearly unchanged, while daytime temperatures may fall slightly.

By Thursday, both night and day temperatures are expected to rise slightly across the country.
