The government has banned use of plastic shopping bags or polypropylene bags at super shops across the country from October 1.

Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Monday said super shops will not be able to keep and use polythene and polypropylene bags to sell products from that day.

Earlier, she held a meeting with stakeholders on formulating strategies for implementing the ban on polythene bags at the secretariat.

The adviser said the super shops will be able to use jute bags as alternatives to plastic bags.

Besides, the government will take the initiative to create awareness against the use of plastic shopping bags or polypropylene bags from September 15 through print and electronic media.
