A recent dolphin survey in Bangladesh has estimated approximately 636 groups, totalling around 1,352 Ganges river dolphins.
The survey, launched by Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, also marked the introduction of a digital platform for CITES certification and featured a dolphin exhibition and documentary.
While speaking as the chief guest at a special discussion held at the Forest Department on the occasion of International Freshwater Dolphin Day 2024, Rizwana emphasised that the presence of freshwater dolphins in the nation’s rivers and water bodies serves as a crucial indicator of environmental health.
To protect these dolphins, she stressed the need to combat water pollution and maintain the natural flow of rivers and wetlands.
Rizwana also called for heightened public awareness and effective implementation of government initiatives, highlighting the importance of involving local communities in conservation efforts.
The adviser also announced plans to introduce risk allowances for forest officials and reiterated that planting native tree species is a fundamental duty of the Forest Department. Additionally, she urged forest guards to take prompt action against illegal logging activities.
