Tourist limit, single-use plastic ban to be imposed on St Martin’s Island

Measures will be taken to limit the number of tourists and restrict overnight stays on St Martin’s Island.

Additionally, the use of single-use plastics will be banned on the island.

Environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan made the announcement during a briefing at the Secretariat on Monday.

The briefing also covered discussions on eco-friendly tourism management and the conservation of biodiversity on St Martin’s Island.

The adviser highlighted the uniqueness of St Martin’s as the only coral island in Bangladesh, emphasizing the necessity of taking decisive steps to preserve it.

She mentioned that initiatives are underway to make St Martin’s, Cox’s Bazar, and Kuakata free of single-use plastics.

Furthermore, she urged compliance with previous guidelines regarding the ban on single-use plastics. Discussions will be held with hotel owners, tour operators, and the Ministry of Tourism to finalize decisions before the upcoming tourist season.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan expressed her desire to preserve St Martin’s for future generations and to see it become a tranquil, noise-free island.

Among those present at the briefing were the Secretary, Additional Secretaries, and the Director General of the Department of Environment.
