Dengue cases cross 200,000 mark this year

The total dengue cases this year crossed the 200,000 mark with 1,793 new cases of hospitalization across the country on Friday.

Meanwhile, the health authority registered 8 new deaths due to the mosquito borne dengue fever, including 4 from the capital Dhaka city.

With the new deaths, the total number of casualties now stood at 975, including 631 from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The fatalities and cases of hospitalization are highest in the last 23 years in the country.

The new hospitalizations were reported till 8:0 am Friday across the country, including 584 from Dhaka, according to DGHS daily update.

Dengue appears to coincide with the rainy season from May to September and higher temperatures in Bangladesh, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The ever worsening dengue situation showed no sign of improvement with the growing deaths and cases.

Furthermore, the health authorities also continued to report a growing number of new cases outside Dhaka. Of the new cases of hospitalization, 1,209 were reported from outside Dhaka.

The total dengue cases rose to 200,981. Of the total cases, 82,471 were from Dhaka, added DGHS.

A total of 9,526 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 3,283 were from Dhaka.

Of the total admitted, 190,480 patients made recovery and returned home, including 78,557 from Dhaka with a 95 per cent recovery rate.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.
