The World Health Day will be observed in the country as elsewhere in the world in a befitting manner on Saturday.

The day is going to be celebrated this year with theme of "Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere".

The World Health Day is a global health awareness day observed every year on April 7, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organisation (WHO), reports BSS.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Directorate General of Health Services and various non-government organisations have taken elaborate programmes to observe the day.

The programmes include seminars, publishing of souvenir, publishing of supplements in different national dailies, screening of film on health issues, film show, folk songs and discussion.

The Health Ministry and the Department of Health Services jointly organised the national level programme at Osmani Memorial Auditorium at 10.30am in Dhaka.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim will inaugurate the national level programme as the chief guest.

Besides, various programmes will also be held at the local level across the country under the supervision of district and upazila health division.

In WHO's 70th anniversary year, World Health Day will focus on "Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere" - ensuring that everyone, everywhere can access essential quality health services without facing financial hardship.

In 1948, the WHO held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate 7 April of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day.

The World Health Day is held to mark WHO's founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organisation to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year.

The WHO organises international, regional and local events on the Day related to a particular theme.
