The World Mental Health Day will be observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe on Wednesday, aiming to raise awareness about the mental health issues and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.

This year's theme of Mental Health Day is "Young people and mental health in a changing world".

Different organisations and professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion, reports UNB.

President Abdul Hamid said, "Mental illness is on the rise in Bangladesh as elsewhere across the globe. The theme of this year's day 'Young people and mental health in a changing world' is appropriate in this regard. Besides, the national development will be hampered if the mental health of the young people should not be ensured."

He also stresses need for taking awareness programme about mental health in the educational institute alongside the government and non-government hospital.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government is committed to reach all kinds of health services, including mental health services, to the doorsteps of people.

The government has established the National Mental Health Institute and Hospital in 2001 which was a milestone in the development of mental health services in the country, she said.
