At least 25 people were injured in a violent clash between two local groups in the Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday morning, reportedly triggered by a dispute over a Facebook status.

The incident occurred around 10 am in the Hajipur area of Harashpur Union, UNB reports.

Tensions escalated after an altercation between two people from the Akshi and Pathan groups, stemming from a Facebook post concerning the allocation of seats in three unions of Bijoynagar upazila.

According to locals, Dana Mia of the Akshi group allegedly assaulted 70-year-old Arju Mia and his daughter Aklima Begum on Wednesday night.

In retaliation, members of both groups clashed with locally made weapons on Saturday, leaving at least 25 injured.

The identities of the injured have not yet been confirmed.

The injured are being treated at various local healthcare centres.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the violence erupted and brought the situation under control. Additional forces have been deployed to prevent further unrest.

Md. Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bijoynagar Police Station, said police are currently deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

Legal action will be taken once a complaint is received, he added.
