Traffic has slowed to a crawl along a 30-km stretch of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway as the holiday travel rush continued apace on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha.
On Friday, long queues of vehicles were seen from the Jamuna Bridge up to the Korotia Bypass.
The congestion left hundreds of vehicles stranded, causing untold hardship for travellers young and old.
Elsewhere, lines of vehicles also stretched from the Jamuna Bridge to Rabna Bypass. Although the situation was not as severe there, traffic was still moving very slowly, bdnews24.com reports.
Tushar Ahmed, a Rajshahi-bound passenger travelling on an Alhamra Paribahan bus, said: “There’s been heavy traffic on the northbound lane due to the high volume of vehicles. I’ve heard that there was congestion throughout Thursday as well.
"I boarded the bus from Dhaka’s Kallyanpur, and with how things are going, I have no idea when I’ll reach home.”
Md Sharif, chief of the Elenga Highway Police Outpost, said: “The Army and police are working together to ease the traffic. We expect traffic to return to normal soon.”
Tangail Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman added, “We’re working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.”
