The National Identity Card (NID) server of the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) is expected to remain accessible from tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

Services from the NID server have remained offline since Tuesday morning due to the ongoing voter list update by the commission.

This unexpected disruption to NID services occurred as the server underwent the issue of a significant strain for the work.

Muhammad Ashraf Hossain, systems manager of the NID Wing, told the FE that NID services would resume on Thursday morning.

"We're trying to restore NID services by Wednesday noon, but this might not be possible. The services are likely to restore on Thursday morning," he said. "We had to temporarily shut down the services because of a significant strain on the NID server during the voter list update."

The official expressed optimism that the services are expected to be restored by Thursday.

However, this temporary shutdown raised significant concerns and impacted various aspects of the nation's administrative processes.

Just last month, a similar situation occurred when the NID server went offline for maintenance purposes.

An estimated 120 million citizens of the country have their personal information in the NID server.

The NID server plays a vital role in maintaining the electoral records and personal information of citizens across Bangladesh.

It serves as a critical database for voter registration, verification and authentication during elections.

The server is also used for various government and non-governmental services that require identification and verification of citizens.

Recently, the personal information of millions of people was leaked out from the government's birth and death registration website concerned.

After the incident, the security issue in the digital information management came in the limelight.
