Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum has faced angry protesters after going to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, or NITOR, to visit those injured during the mass uprising.
The protesters also detained her car for some time on Wednesday.
The advisor managed to leave, but those injured in the uprising blocked the road in front of NITOR to continue their demonstrations. The protest blocked traffic from Shyamoli’s Shishu Mela to Agargaon road, reports bdnews24.com.
The protesters allege the health advisor did not visit all the injured patients and they are not being provided proper healthcare.
Nurjahan went to the hospital according to a pre-announced schedule at 11:30am on Wednesday. She was accompanied by British High Commissioner in Bangladesh Sarah Cooke.
A group of British doctors have come to Dhaka to provide treatment for those injured in the uprising.
At 11:15am, the health advisor went to the special ward set up for them on the fourth floor of NITOR. She went inside, inspected the area, and spoke to the injured.
Around 12:45pm, the advisor exited the hospital. The protesters then took up positions in front of her motorcade. They staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the car and some even climbed on top of it.
Nurjahan and the British high commissioner were forced to use another vehicle to leave the premises.
The protesters then gathered on the road in front of NITOR, chanting slogans calling for proper treatment of the injured and other demands.
“We are not receiving treatment,” a protester named Khairul said. “That is why we have taken up positions on the streets. We demand that our proper treatment be ensured.”
Most of the protesters refused to speak to the media. They claimed they would not quit the road until coordinators and advisors came to meet them.
The protest had blocked traffic on the road as of 4:15pm.
