A Bangladeshi expatriate was held 81,030 US dollars at Velana International Airport (VIA) in Maldives on Sunday, said the VIA customs house authority.

The expatriate, Shamim Islam Sagar, was trying to return to Bangladesh with the large amount of dollars without a valid declaration, reports local media citing the VIA.

Maldives Aviation Security Command said on social media platform ‘X’ that Shamim was detained as his movements seemed suspicious while leaving the Maldives airport for Dhaka.

Later, his bag was searched and $81,300 was found in a packet of food.

According to Maldives law, anyone entering or leaving the country with more than $20,000 must declare the amount to customs in advance.

Airport authority believes that he was involved with the illegal hundi traders.
