Bengal Group of Industries Chairman Morshed Alam, who was arrested on Tuesday night, has been sent to jail in a case filed over the murder of a teenage boy, Md Shamim in capital’s Dhanmondi area during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order following a hearing on Wednesday.
Earlier, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Sub-Inspector Shaheen Mia produced him before the court and sought his detention.
The defence counsel submitted a bail plea on behalf of the accused, while Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi opposed the bail petition.
The magistrate ordered that the accused be sent to jail after the hearing.
Morshed Alam was elected MP from Noakhali-2 constituency with the AL ticket in 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections.
He is also the chairman of Bengal Media Corporation Limited that owns private television RTV.
He was the chairman of Mercantile Bank and a founding director of National Life Insurance.
