Border Guard Bangladesh is deploying 229 platoons across the country, including in Dhaka, to maintain law and order amid a ‘complete shutdown’ programme instituted by quota reform protesters.

BGB spokesman Shariful Islam announced the deployment in a statement, according to a bdnews24.com report.

Previously, the BGB had been deployed in eight districts, including the capital, amid protest programmes by students and job seekers calling for reforms to the quota system for government jobs.

On Tuesday, the BGB were deployed in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Bogura, Rangpur and Rajshahi in two separate announcements. They were deployed in the Jahangirnagar University area as well.

Six people were killed amid clashes between the quota protesters, pro-Awami League activists, and the police on Tuesday, spurring further demonstrations.

On Wednesday, the BGB were also deployed in the Faridpur and Cox’s Bazar districts and the Dhaka University area.
