Bangladesh Physiotherapy Association(BPA), the national organisation of physiotherapy professionals in Bangladesh demanded inclusion of Physiotherapy in the Health Reform Commission and recruitment of physiotherapy doctors in 9th grade positions, says a press release on Sunday.

The demand was made at a seminar titled “Physiotherapy in Public Health Protection: Review of the Health Reform Commission Report” held on Saturday at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club in Dhaka.

Addressing the programme, Professor Dr. Mohammad Sohrab Hossain, Executive Director of the Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP), stated that the academic merit with which physiotherapists study and attain higher degrees—along with their internships and licensed clinical practice abroad—is not being reflected in their professional recognition in Bangladesh.

He emphasised that they deserve the fair right to government employment under the 9th grade. He also clarified that physiotherapists and technologists are not the same.

He stressed that while every aspect of the medical sector is necessary for the country, if treatment services are provided by technologists without proper supervision and without guidance from qualified physiotherapists, patients will be harmed.

Dr Shahadat Hossain (PT), General Secretary of the Bangladesh Physiotherapy Association (BPA), called the exclusion of physiotherapy professionals by the Health Reform Commission an extreme act of discrimination.

He demanded the inclusion of physiotherapy doctors in the healthcare system and their deployment and recruitment from the upazila (sub-district) to the tertiary levels.
