Chittagong Port has returned to full operations after two days, as customs officials and employees have resumed work. As a result, import and export activities at the country’s main seaport have returned to normal.

Although operational activities slowed down since Sunday night, container handling and unloading at Chittagong Port regained their usual rhythm from Monday morning.

Containers carrying export goods are arriving at the port from various private depots in Chattogram, while containers carrying import goods are being transported to depots from the port, reports bdnews24.com.

Chittagong Port Secretary Md Omar Faruk said that the port has resumed regular operations after workers at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) called off their strike. The loading and unloading of containers from ships, the discharge of goods, and the transportation of export containers arriving at the port are all underway at full swing.

The secretary believes that the containers that have piled up in the yard after two days of customs standstill will soon be cleared.

The Customs House, Chattogram office has been bustling with the footsteps of C&F agents since the morning. All activities, including bill entry submission and the customs clearance of goods, have resumed.

Chattogram Customs Deputy Commissioner Saidul Islam told bdnews24.com that work started on Sunday night after the shutdown was lifted. However, all import and export-related work resumed in full swing from Monday morning.

He is hopeful that the backlog of work caused by the shutdown will be cleared within a few days.

A “complete shutdown” programme by NBR officials and employees brought all types of import and export activities through Chittagong Port to a standstill for the past two days. The number of containers piled up in the port's yard increased as they were not being cleared.
