The Election Commission will soon start the process of providing National Identity (NID) Cards to Bangladeshis living in the United States.
Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana on Wednesday said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with district and upazila election officials in Munshiganj regarding NIDs.
"We are gradually completing the distribution work of NID across the world. Distribution of NID simultaneously in all countries requires more manpower what we don’t have. It will be implemented in other countries in phases," she said.
Mentioning that the election commissioners are personally engaged at the field level to hasten the process of NID related work, she said the EC is strictly monitoring that citizens are not harassed while carrying out this important task.
Rashida Sultana said the National Identity Card has now become an essential document for the citizens, as without this card they do not have access to many essential services.
"We want eligible people to get the national identity cards as quickly as possible. For that reason, we are personally visiting various locations time to time”.
Earlier in June, the EC started providing smart NIDs to Bangladeshis living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under a pilot project.
