Senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that a “conspiracy is under way to erase the memory of 1971”, urging Bangladeshis to unite in defending the legacy of the Liberation War.
In a Janmashthami programme on Thursday, Fakhrul said the Liberation War gave the people of Bangladesh an “independent identity”.
“I want to repeatedly remember the martyrs of 1971… Because of it, I exist today. I also want to recall the martyrs of July–August 2024, because they gave us the chance to dream of democracy.”
He warned that an effort was taking shape to obscure the truth of the nine-month war.
“All citizens of Bangladesh must unite against it. The July–August uprising is as true as the nine months of 1971. And who declared that war? Our party founder, the martyred president Ziaur Rahman.”
Turning to extremism, Fakhrul said: “A new conspiracy is surfacing, that extremism is rising in Bangladesh. This cannot be allowed. If it rises, the soul of our nation will not survive.”
He urged political unity saying, “No one should practise divisive politics anymore. For the survival of Bangladesh, to move the country forward, we must all work together.”
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined virtually from London, greeted with conch shells and drums.
