Rear Admiral (Retired) Khurshed Alam, Secretary of Maritime Affairs Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has resigned, marking the end of his tenure as the longest-serving contractual official.
Mr Alam’s resignation, submitted on Sunday, follows widespread criticism from influential circles regarding his perceived support for the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina.
Mr Alam first assumed leadership of the foreign ministry's maritime wing in 2009, after retiring from the Navy as a Commodore. His initial three-year contract was extended multiple times, and he was subsequently elevated to the position of Secretary.
In a rare move, he was also retroactively promoted to Rear Admiral.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the government has cancelled the appointment of Khorshed Alam Khastagir as Bangladesh's Ambassador to Poland.
This decision came amid reports that Mr Khastagir had filed complaints with Malaysian authorities against Bangladeshi students protesting against the Hasina government in Kuala Lumpur, where he was serving as Deputy High Commissioner.
