At least four people have died in two separate road accidents on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj.
As many as 21 people were injured in the accidents that occurred on Thursday night and early Friday, according to Hasara Highway Police Station chief Abdul Qader Jilani, accordin to a bdnews24.com report.
A bus on the Dhaka-bound lane of the expressway rammed a vehicle in front of it around 5 am in Sreenagar on Friday, he said. The accident killed the bus driver and his helper while five other people were injured.
However, the victims have yet to be identified.
On Thursday night, an Abdullah Paribahan bus rammed a stationary covered van on the Mawa bound lane at Sirajdikhan’s Nimtala on Thursday night.
The bus was heavily damaged, killing two people, including the helper to the driver. Another 16 people were injured.
The dead were identified as bus helper Md Jibon from Kolligaon village in Sreenagar Upazila and passenger Md Raihan from Debipura village in Sirajdikhan Upazila.
The bodies have been kept in the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, the OC said.
The police officer also said that the covered van was seized after the accident, but the driver fled.
The 55 km long expressway, the first in the country, stretching to Faridpur’s Bhanga from Dhaka. It has turned into a ‘hotspot of accidents.’
On Dec 27, six people from two families were killed and four people critically injured when a bus ran over them at the Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza of the expressway.
The data from Munshiganj Road Department showed that 140 people were killed while 1,445 were injured in 990 accidents on the expressway from June 2022 to new.
According to the Hasara Highway Police, 39 people have died in 68 accidents that took place on the expressway over a year. More than 150 were injured.
