Due to the low-pressure area in the North Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas, heavy rainfall may occur in the country and upstream in the Indian states of Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya in the next few days.
As a result, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Water Development Board has predicted the possibility of flooding in Feni.
The centre has also warned of flooding in the low-lying areas of some districts of Chattogram Division, reports bdnews24.com.
Executive Engineer Sarder Udoy Raihan told bdnews24.com on Thursday, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the next six days in the upstream and coastal areas of India bordering Chattogram Division.
“As a result, river water levels in Feni and several other districts of the Division may rise and flow near the warning level.
“Flood conditions may prevail in the low-lying areas of Feni and other districts during these six days. When the rains subside, the potential situation may improve.”
Generally, if 44 to 88mm of rain is recorded in 24 hours, it is called heavy rain, and if more than 88mm of rain is recorded, it is called very heavy rain.
In the second week of July, five Upazilas of Feni were hit by floods due to heavy rain, while severe waterlogging occurred in six Upazilas of Noakhali.
According to the centre’s regular bulletin on Thursday, all major rivers across the country are currently flowing below the danger level.
The Flood Forecasting Centre has said heavy to very heavy rain has been observed in the Chattogram Division in the past 24 hours. However, there was no significant rainfall in the upstream regions of the country.
The bulletin mentioned that a low-pressure system has formed over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.
Under its influence, along with active monsoon winds and heavy rainfall, the coastal regions of Bangladesh, Sylhet Division, Chattogram Division, and the adjoining upstream areas of three states in India are expected to experience heavy rain from Jul 24 to 27.
Currently, the water levels of the Feni, Muhuri, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri rivers, Rahmatkhali canal and Noakhali canal are rising, while the water levels of Gomti and Silonia Rivers are decreasing.
However, river water levels may rise over the next three days. In this period, the Muhuri and Silonia rivers in Feni may exceed the danger level, potentially causing flooding.
The water levels of the Feni, Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri rivers, as well as the Rahmatkhali and Noakhali canals in Chattogram, Bandarban, Cox's Bazar, Lakshmipur, and Noakhali districts, may rise and flow near the warning level, potentially leading to flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
Although the water levels of the Manu and Khowai rivers in Sylhet Division are stable now, they may increase in the next three days. The water levels of the Khowai River may increase in the next 24 hours and flow within the warning limit.
The water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet are currently receding. They are expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours but may rise again in the following two days.
According to the Flood Forecasting Centre, the water level of the Ganga and Padma rivers is increasing, which may continue for the next four days and remain stable for the next one day, flowing below the danger limit.
Normal tides are prevailing in the coastal rivers of Barishal, Khulna, and Chattogram Divisions, but the Flood Forecasting Centre has said higher than normal tides may be observed in the next three days.
