Human resources worth Tk 218 billion were lost as 7,294 people were killed in road accidents in 2024 in the country, according to a report revealed by the Road Safety Foundation on Wednesday.
Last year, as many as 6,927 road accidents occurred in the country, which killed 7,294 people and injured 12,019 others. Of the dead, 893 were women (12.24 per cent), and 1152 were children (15.79per cent).
Of the total, 2609 people were killed in 2,761 motorcycle accidents, which is 35.76 per cent of the total deaths.
Of them, 1,535 pedestrians were killed in accidents, which is 21.04 per cent of the total deaths. 984 vehicle drivers and assistants were killed, the report added.
During this period, 152 people were killed, 161 were injured, and 39 were missing in 118 boat accidents. 324 people were killed and 277 were injured in 347 railway accidents.
The Road Safety Foundation has prepared the report based on nine national dailies, seven online news portals, electronic media and the organization's own data.
The foundation's observation and analysis say that 34 per cent of the accidents occurred on national highways, 39.49 per cent on regional roads, 14 per cent on rural roads and 11.31 per cent on city roads.
The highest number of accidents and fatalities occurred in Dhaka division. 1,840 people were killed in 1,582 accidents. Sylhet division had the lowest number of accidents with 435 accidents, killing 443 people.
In the capital, 246 people were killed and 482 were injured in 394 road accidents.
