The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered three policemen to be jailed in connection with charges of crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, issued the order on Monday.

The three policemen are Assistant Commissioner Tanjil Ahmed, Constable Hossain Ali and Constable Akram Hossain.

Tribunal Prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud provided details of the case, shedding light on the allegations against them.

Among them, Tanzil was implicated in the murder of Imam Hossain Taim of Jatrabari, while Akram Hossain faced charges in connection with the killing of an individual named Hridoy in Gazipur’s Konabari. According to Sultan, both of these policemen had earlier been shown arrested in the case brought before the tribunal.

“After the hearing in the afternoon, Hossain Ali was shown arrested in the ICT case. Later, an order was given to send all of them to jail,” Sultan stated.

Taim, a second-year student at Narayanganj Government Adamji Nagar MW College, was fatally shot in the Jatrabari area on Jul 20, 2024.

Taim's mother, Parveen Akhter, filed a case on Aug 20, 2024, shortly after the Awami League government was ousted in a violent uprising.

According to the case dossier, the curfew was briefly lifted between 12pm and 2pm on Jul 20. During this time-frame, Taim and two of his friends went to the Kajla area of Jatrabari for tea. Protesters had gathered there as part of the ongoing movement. It is alleged that Deputy Commissioner Iqbal Hossain ordered the use of tear gas, sound grenades, rubber bullets, and live ammunition on the crowd, resulting in Taim's death.

Fearing for their lives, Taim and his two friends sought refuge in a nearby tea shop and pulled the shutter down to shield themselves. However, the lower part of the shutter remained partially open, leaving them exposed.

According to the complaint, policemen then forcibly pulled out those who were hiding inside. In the ensuing chaos, Taim attempted to escape, but he was shot as he fled and collapsed to the ground.

He succumbed to his injuries on the spot, without receiving medical attention.
