In a bid to support those injured during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, the government will offer them employment within the police force, according to Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

On Tuesday, the advisor also announced plans to recruit 1,000 students to assist with managing Dhaka’s persistent traffic congestion, reports bdnews24.com.

However, he says that initiatives to recruit members of various government forces in traffic control have not received sufficient response.

The advisor made these remarks during a visit to the Special Branch, or SB, and Criminal Investigation Department, or CID, offices in the Malibagh area of the capital.

He was accompanied by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, Additional IG of SB Md Golam Rasul, and Additional IG of CID Matiur Rahman, among other senior officials.

Following his meeting with the law-enforcing agencies, Jahangir said: “Many people were killed and plenty were injured during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. We have sent a proposal on how to arrange employment for those who were injured. We can recruit those who were injured into the police and arrange employment for them."

He also added that the majority of the injured now face various difficulties and, as such, they cannot be recruited everywhere.

“However, they will be appointed very soon,” said Jahangir.

The advisor said that initially, the government has hired as many as 100 people who were injured during the July uprising.

“We may increase the number gradually,” he added.

Speaking of Dhaka’s lingering traffic issues, Jahangir said: “The traffic problem persists. Although this problem is not the sole responsibility of the home ministry, we have sent a proposal to recruit 1,000 students to the traffic force.”

“So far, 400 people have been hired. Plus, we sent another proposal - wanting to recruit some from the retired police forces, the BGB, Ansar, Army, Navy, Air Force and place them on traffic duty.”

“But the response to it was very low. I thought many more would want to come. But we did not get a very large number of responses. You can advertise that if they come, we will take in a large number. For now, we have got only 50-60 people. We wanted to start with at least 500 or 600 people. But we did not get that many responses.”
